It remains the case that different mortgage lenders have different criteria when it comes to what income they are willing to take into account for mortgage purposes but this change is a step in the right direction given that the purposes of child support payments are to support a child and part of that is to provide a secure home.  The difficulty to me seems to be that most lenders will require the child support payments to be backed by the Child Maintenance Service or court order, whereas the government encourages parents to make private arrangements for sorting out child support and the Child Maintenance Service now charge fees for their service.  It would be a shame if people were forced to make an application through the Child Maintenance Service simply to satisfy mortgage conditions and then will be required to pay the fees for that service.
