The Court of Protection has ruled that a woman suffering from drug related psychosis may be given a caesarean section to deliver her baby if doctors deem this necessary.
It was considered that the woman concerned would be unable to make this decision for herself. The judge described the decision before him as "enormous".
This decision is intended to enable the doctors caring for the woman and her unborn child to make the decisions they may need to where the woman is unable to consent.
The judge said he could not “micro-manage” the birth and was giving doctors power to make decisions. But he stressed that everyone involved in the woman’s treatment had to respect her wishes and feelings.
